In “The Volcano Next Door,” from the April issue of National Geographic magazine, writer Michael Finkel takes readers on a journey of 1800°F temperatures, killer gases, and fiery eruptions. Last month was a good example, and one which is exciting to me not only because it allowed me to look at some local geology, but because it presented an opportunity to teach students about the subject and open their eyes to what is all around them.
